Proof of the exact day you had the photo.
Every image you upload is timestamped automatically. A record that can never be altered or backdated, ready the day you need it.
Included in: Pro and Business.
Prove the file was yours on a given day.
Each protected image is fingerprinted and the fingerprint is written to a public blockchain, which nobody can backdate, including us.
Your photo stays private. Only a code goes out.
The timestamp is taken from a hash of the image, so the proof is public while the photograph itself never is.
Anyone can check it without asking you.
The record lives on a public chain, so a lawyer, a platform or a court can confirm the date without taking our word for it.
Your proof keeps working even without Rightling.
Download the proof for any photo and keep it with your own files. Anyone can check it with free, public tools, even if Rightling closed down tomorrow.
Your name and camera data are locked to the photo.
A timestamp proves when, not who. The name and camera details inside a photo can be edited in seconds, so on their own they prove nothing. We lock them to your photo the moment you upload, so any later change shows.
An evidence pack, ready to send.
When a case starts, the ownership record, the first-seen date and the match history are already gathered in one place.
Four questions a court asks. Four answers.
Proof of ownership is not one clever trick. It is four separate things, each answering a different question, and together they leave very little to argue about.
- Watermark-ID (Who owns it?) A hidden identifier is written into the image itself. You cannot see it, a screenshot keeps it, and it ties the picture back to the right owner.
- Visual fingerprint (Is it the same picture?) A compact description of what the image looks like. Crop it, resize it, drain the colour out of it, and it still recognises the same motif.
- File fingerprint (Has it been altered?) A fingerprint of the file itself. Change one pixel and it changes completely, so the original is provably untouched, byte for byte.
- Blockchain (When was it?) The fingerprint is written into a public chain nobody can rewrite, which fixes the date beyond doubt. Not even we can move it afterwards.
Why the record holds up in a dispute.
It does not prove you took the photo. It proves the exact image existed in your account at a specific moment, and that record can never be altered.
- Timestamped on upload. Every image is recorded the instant it enters your account.
- Impossible to backdate. An immutable record that can never be altered or moved.
- Independently verifiable. Blockchain timestamps are increasingly recognized in courts worldwide.
- Stronger in a dispute. Show that you had the work, and were protecting it, first.
Who it is for
- Photographers. A client says the shoot was work for hire. The upload date settles it, and you did not have to remember to register anything.
- Artists & illustrators. A print sells and the buyer asks what proves it is yours. The record was written the day the file entered your account.
- Galleries & brands. Campaign assets pass through agencies and freelancers. A timestamp per file makes the chain of ownership arguable in your favour.
Questions about proof of ownership.
- How does blockchain timestamping work?
- When you upload an image, we create a SHA-256 hash (fingerprint) and anchor it to the Bitcoin blockchain using OpenTimestamps. This creates cryptographic proof of exactly when you owned that specific file.
- How long does blockchain confirmation take?
- Submission is instant. Full Bitcoin blockchain confirmation typically takes 1-2 hours. Once confirmed, your timestamp is immutable and verifiable forever.
- Is blockchain proof legally valid?
- Yes. Blockchain timestamps are increasingly recognized in courts worldwide as evidence of prior existence. Combined with your original file and .ots certificate, you have strong legal proof of ownership.
- Can I download proof for legal disputes?
- Yes. Download your .ots certificate file from the dashboard. This file, combined with your original image and a timestamp verifier, provides cryptographic proof that withstands legal scrutiny.
- What if I already registered copyright traditionally?
- Blockchain timestamping complements traditional registration. While copyright registration provides statutory benefits in some jurisdictions, blockchain proof establishes the exact moment of creation, useful for disputes where timing matters.
